C2 English level — what it actually means

C2 is mastery. At C2 you understand effectively everything you hear or read and express fine shades of meaning without effort, including in unfamiliar and abstract subjects. It is not "native speaker" — plenty of native speakers are not at C2 in a formal register — it is precision and range under any conditions. Very few learners need C2; it matters for translation, academia, law and writing for publication.
